Hvar Library launches photo competition to highlight winter life

A photography competition is launched by Hvar library to highlight an aspect unknown to many on Croatia’s premier island: its winter.
The public library in Hvar Town launched a month-long photography competition on December 20, 2011, inviting submissions from photographers of all ages, around the theme of Hvar in winter. The competition, which runs from December 20 to January 20 next year, aims to highlight the beauty and atmosphere of the island of Hvar in winter, a season which is much less well known to tourists, and where the pace of life is decidedly different. Photography to highlight Hvar in winter. An exhibition of the competition’s submissions will be held in February and hosted at the City Loggia in front of Hotel Palace. Each photographer may submit up to three photographs, in digital format only, and pictures must be taken during the time frame of the competition, and be either of Hvar Town itself, or its environs. More information about the competition can be obtained from the library on knjiznica.hvar@inet.hr . The exhibition is certain to highlight unfamiliar aspects to Hvar, which was recently named the number 5 destination for 2012 by Lonely Planet, as it is better known for its infamous sunshine, great beaches, vibrant nightlife and celebrity draw – both Prince Harry and Beyonce made global headlines on their respective 2011 Hvar visits, for example Winter on Hvar. Winter is a much quieter affair, as locals concentrate on the olive harvest and working in the fields, with fishing another popular winter activity. Although less busy, there is plenty to see and experience on the island, as was highlighted in the premiere of a Hvar-produced documentary Lavender smells from the top in Split earlier this week. While the beaches – including Jerolim, voted top naturist beach in the world by CNN last month – may be empty, there are numerous other tourism activities on offer, including agro-tourism and sailing, with the 35th Laser Europa Cup Regatta beginning on December 28th, for example, an event which will no doubt inspire a photography entry or two.
